How To Learn Spanish

(And Other Letter Based Languages)

(Uses: Vocabulary Method)

Today we live in a more connected world where we have to communicate with people from different countries. It is very important to know a foreign language so you can communicate with people who speak a different language especially if you go to another country. I remember in high school how long and boring it was to learn a foreign language. You probably remembered words just by repetition. I took four years of Spanish and barely remember any of it!

How would you remember “comer - to eat”? You would probably repeat this a hundred times. Hopefully after all the time you spent, you should be able to remember it when you are speaking to someone else. But what happens when you do talk to someone? You can’t remember the word to save your life!

When you try to learn words through pure repetition, you are just tossing all of those words in your head in a disorganized manner and when you need to recall a word, you can’t find it. Well don’t worry because now you will learn how to remember foreign languages quickly and be able to recall words when you need to! The language we will be using as an example is Spanish (the technique you learn will work for other letter base languages such as French or German).

The hardest problem when it comes to languages is being able to pronounce a word correctly. I remember trying to say something in Spanish that I couldn’t get the right pronunciation and said the wrong thing. My partner was very confused! Let’s first focus on remembering the word itself. The Spanish word we will take for example is “comer - to eat.”

Now the first thing you should do is find a location where you will store the meaning of the word and the word itself. You can do this by coming up with a location that is related to the word or letting the word create the location for you similar to the vocabulary technique. So for “comer - to eat” maybe it makes you think of a kitchen or a restaurant because those are places where you eat. You based the location off of what the words mean. Or say you had the word “luz - light.” The word luz sounds like moose so you might think of a forest. In this example, you allowed the word to create the location you will be using.

You now have the location to place the image for the word you are going to make, but you need to focus on remembering on how to recall the correct pronunciation. The image you are going to make for the Spanish word is going to be based on how the Spanish word is pronounce.
